THE SUN TEMPLE, KONARK, ORRISSA I have read somewhere that the word “Konark” comes from the sandhi of two shabdas , which is a culmination of two words named - “Kona + Arka”. Arka refers to Sun god while Kona refers to direction or vision .In Sanskrit, Sun god has many names like mithra,arka,bhanu,Udaya,Surya,aditya,bhaskara etc The temple was built exceptionally when I first visted the place, it was like I had only heard about it in books and seen it on Television, I was wander-struck when I saw how magnificent this place was. Each and every pillar of the walls were surrounded by iron plates studded with deities and Gods and every walls had its own story to tell. There are 24 wheels and Believe it or not, people thought that all the 24 wheels were just carved for beauty and as Hindu symbols.
