The Sun Temples, konark, Odhisa

THE SUN TEMPLE, KONARK, ORRISSA

I have read somewhere that the word “Konark” comes from the sandhi of two shabdas, which is a culmination of two words named - “Kona + Arka”. Arka refers to Sun god while Kona refers to direction or vision .In Sanskrit, Sun god has many names like mithra, arka, bhanu,Udaya,Surya, aditya, bhaskara etc

The temple was built exceptionally when I first visted the place, it was like I had only heard about it in books and seen it on Television, I was wander-struck when I saw how magnificent this place was. Each and every pillar of the walls were surrounded by iron plates studded with deities and Gods and every walls had its own story to tell.

There are 24 wheels and Believe it or not, people thought that all the 24 wheels were just carved for beauty and as Hindu symbols. It was about 100 years ago, it was known that this was a sundial when an old yogi was seen calculating time secretly.

Apparently selected people were using these wheels for generations and for 650 years no one else knew about it.

The temple also has two huge lions on both side of the entry. Each lion is shown as a grave an elephant. As its know that Lion represents pride and elephant represents money.I had also observed that   beneath every elephant lies the human body. .

On returning I got to see the view of the beach, I stopped there for a while and enjoyed the beauty that this place holds.

will you visit this place someday??
