Golden Temple - Centre of Sikhism








Golden temple is situated in the city of Amritsar, Punjab, India and is 2-3 kms from Amritsar Railway Station and approx 15kms from the Guru Ram Das International Airport.The Golden Temple" or Darbar Sahib is the most holiest Gurdwara of sikh. 



The gurdwara is built in the center of man-made pool, it was constructed under the guidance of Guru Ram Dasin 1577, then the foundation stone was laid in 1589. After that in 1604, Guru Arjan placed a copy of the The Holy Book of Sikhism in Harmandir Sahib. 



The Gurdwara was repeatedly rebuilt by the Sikhs after it was destroyed several times by Muslim armies from Afghanistan and the Mughal Empire. Maharaja Ranjit Singh after founding the Sikh Empire, rebuilt it in copper & marble in 1809 & overlaid the sanctum with gold foil in 1830. This gave it the name by which its known today "The Golden Temple".
